The Regulations Governing the Export of Fish and Fishery Products to the European Union

  • These Regulations are made by the Ministry of Trade Industries and Labour (Ministry of Economic Development and Trade) by the powers conferred on it by Clause 1 of The Export Import Act of the Republic of Maldives (Act No.: 31/79). These Regulations shall be cited as “The Regulations Governing the Export of Fish and Fishery Products to the European Union”
  • Upon the date of coming into force of these Regulations, the following conditions need to be complied with in order to export fish or fishery products to any country of the European Union;
  1. the hygiene standards required under Chapter II, Annex of the Council of European Communities of Council Directive Number 91/493/EEC (22 July 1991), shall be maintained during unloading/handling of fish for export or while processing fish for export.
  2. ensure that handling, storing, preparing or processing of fish or fishery products for export is carried out in a place authorized by the Department of Public Health and in accordance with the requirements under Chapters III and IV, Annex of The Council of Union Communities of the Council Directive Number 91/493/EEC (22 July 1991).
  3. ensure that inspection by the Department of Public Health (Maldives Food and Drug Authority) is carried out in accordance with the requirements under Chapter V, Annex of The Council of Union Communities of the Council Directive Number 91/493/EEC (22 July 1991), while exporting fish or fishery products.
  4. ensure that packaging fish or fishery products for export is in accordance with the requirements under Chapter VI, Annex of The Council of Union Communities of the Council Directive Number 91/493/EEC (22 July 1991).
  5. ensure that identification numbers are placed in accordance with sub-regulation (4) of these Regulations.
  6. ensure that fish or fishery products for export is stored and transported in accordance with the requirements under Chapter VIII, Annex of The Council of Union Communities of the Council Directive Number 91/493/EEC (22 July 1991).
  1. The Department of Public Health (Maldives Food and Drug Authority) of the Ministry of Health shall be the competent Authority to ensure that Council Directive Number 91/493/EEC (22 July 1991) of The Council of Union Communities are complied with in the Republic of Maldives.
  2. The following information must be placed in the consignment or the packaging in order to facilitate the inspection and tracing of places in which the fish or fishery products were processed;
  1. that the country of origin is Republic of Maldives;
  2. the registration number of the place where the fish was processed
  1. These Regulations shall come into force on 1 January 1996.
